I disagree with the banning of books for the same reason banning free speech is wrong. Banning books is like banning ideas, and by banning opposition we ban all competition and opposing views making it harder for us to evolve our views and rid us of our freedom to express ourselves. The book, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, was challenged for being anti-cop as it supported Black Lives Matter, and its use of drugs and profanity. The book is written from the perspective of a 16 year old girl named Starr who is caught between two worlds, as she lives in a predominantly black area but goes to a predominantly white school. As she watches a close friend get shot she realizes that she needs to do something that will fit within both her worlds, and so she becomes a BLM activist. Whether I agree with the views of the book or BLM doesn't have any relevance, nor should it matter to anyone if discussing banning a book. No matter the contents of a book it should be accessible to all in order for others to learn from it as stated in Core Values of Librarianship, Code of Ethics, Freedom to Read Statement, and Library Bill of Rights.
